A new exhibition at the Fine Arts Museum in Lausanne might just as well be called “Spot the Difference”. Paintings by Alex Katz, one of the best-known contemporary American painters have been hung alongside a selection of works by Felix Vallotton, one of Switzerland’s most renowned artists who lived 100 years ago. The show is like walking through the studio of artists who could very well have been painting side by side. Although Katz was born two years after Vallotton died and knew very little of him, there are uncanny resemblances in the themes that inspired them and in the way they painted.

Le Musée cantonal des Beaux arts à Lausanne propose un parcours de découverte insolite : deux peintres qui ne se sont jamais connus – et pour cause, le peintre américain, Alex Katz (1927) est né deux ans après la mort du suisse, Félix Vallotton (1865-1925). Ils entrent dans un jeu de correspondance d’autant plus surprenant que les sujets et les ambiances de leurs œuvres picturales se ressemblent.
Lorsqu’il a été approché par Bernard Fibicher, le directeur du Musée et commissaire de l‘exposition, Alex Katz s’en est lui-même étonné.
Dans une interview pour World Radio Switzerland pour l’émission Arts.ch du 2 avril 2013, Bernard Fibicher raconte comment l’idée lui est venue et comment une mise en résonnance des œuvres permet étrangement d’apprécier davantage les deux peintres.
