Sabine Weiss x Nathalie Boutté, a tribute

A delightful parallel to the Moriyama show is offered with the exhibition at Photo Elysée of Sabine Weiss (1924-2021), who also began her career as a street photographer and whose work also spanned 60 years.

But unlike the Japanese artist, Sabine Weiss made a name for herself not only in photojournalism, but in fashion and advertising as well. Numerous events are taking place this year in Switzerland, France and Germany to celebrate the centenary of the birth of an amazingly talented and independant woman.

The French artist Natalie Boutté has been invited by Photo Elysée to create a visual dialogue with the Swiss photographer. Using tiny strips of paper with quotes by the Weiss, she creates reproductions that give a teasing depth to Weiss’ work.

Sabine Weiss’ archives were entrusted by the artist to Photo Elysée in 2017.

“To be powerful, a photograph must speak to us about some aspect of the human condition, making us feel the emotion the photographer experienced in front of his or her subject.” SW

Does that sound familiar? You can almost Daido Moriyama speaking…
