EPFL+ECAL Lab show gives reality a boost

“Give me more” demands a new exhibit in Renens. Researchers from Lausanne’s Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) and designers from Lausanne’s University of Art and Design (ECAL) combine their creativity to kick-start innovation in new fields. Until 30 October, the current exhibit shows how imagination can give technology a boost and guide us towards uncharted territories, some of them surprisingly poetic.

Sports legends sculpted in sand at Olympic Museum

Ephemeral sand sculptures at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne celebrate Olympic legends. Leonidas, antiquity’s most renowned runner rubs shoulders with Roger, today’s Swiss tennis hero. Carved out of blocks of compacted sand, they defy the elements but fear the wind as much as they do the rain. If the sculptures stand until the end of the exhibition on 13 September, the public will be invited to destroy them.

Pierre Keller: best invention for Swiss design since Swatch

Recognized by Business Week as one of the best design schools in the world, the Lausanne University of Art & Design, known as écal, owes its meteoric rise to a Director who is variably described as intimidating, irreverent, daring, or just plain charismatic. Pierre Keller has probably done as much to revitalize the image of Swiss design as the invention of the Swatch.
